Introduction

  • About

One of the mainstream genres in Korean art history is crafts, to which especially ceramic crafts are central. The field of ceramic crafts has abundant records in artifacts and archives, with the unlimited potential to apply to various fields. Historically, the ceramics industry has been a typical high-value-added industry, and leading countries have prevented the manufacturing techniques from leaking out. Korea had already begun to create the celadon at the end of the 9th century and further created the porcelain prior to the medieval age. Such technical achievements had been historically found only by China and Korea. This tradition has become immeasurable assets to our craft education.

The Department of Ceramics within the College of Design has been making unrelenting efforts to harmonize the traditional aesthetics and culture of Korea with the modern design world with the breadth of education. In addition, the Department has developed creative educational contents based on the characteristics of the traditional beauty, and provided a diverse educational environment with in-depth training on artistic expression ability and broad creativity. The Department also aims to foster professional ceramics craftsmen with an international experience who can be recognized on the world stage, and ensure expertise as a professional designer in the knowledge-based society.

  • Vision

The Department of Ceramics intends to simultaneously realize the sectoral connectivity and depth of the education with “harmony of theory and practice”, “reinforced practical courses classified into crafts, design, and industry” and “innovative digital education.” The major education trains the students to grow as, “a professional ceramics craftsman with an international experience who harmonizes aesthetics and culture with the modern design world on the basis of Korean characteristics, and can be recognized on the world stage,” “a professional with various expression skills and creativity,” and “an intellect who lead the society with digital information and future-oriented culture in the digital age.” Furthermore, such major courses are organically harmonized and convergent. For this purpose, the Department hired full-time instructors who are dedicated to theoretical subjects, and encourages students to utilize the practical room as a place of open emotions where dialogue and discussion coexist, not merely a place to acquire skills. The Department also operates independent computer rooms to maximize students' digital design ability in addition to the computer room at the College of Design. To employ new expressions of ceramics which incorporates the rapid molding technology, the Department continues to develop the educational contents. Based on the efforts, to nurture professionals who can lead cultural industrial society and knowledge-based society in the 21st century, the Department aims to cultivate competent ceramic craftsmen with understanding, application, and expertise in various fields as the main goal of education by integrating students with interdisciplinary knowledge.
