The College of Design connects three graduate schools
in both competitive and cooperative development,

such as the Graduate School that focuses on design research based on interdisciplinary connectivity, the Graduate College of Design that focuses on professional designers and citizen re-education, and the Graduate School of Techno Design focusing on convergent education and related projects in new.

    Graduate School

    The Graduate School, which systemized the educational philosophy of the College of Design through advanced courses, has been playing a pivotal role in cultivating the leadership talents such as design experts and educators for the last 35 years. The curriculum has enabled the international-level education and research by inviting designers, writers, executives, researchers as well as full-time professors at College of Design, and further facilitated the expertise of the students through excellent products and journal publications, even receiving domestic and international spotlights during their college years. Undergraduate students are allowed to enter the graduate courses in advance for the concurrent (Bachelor’s-Master’s) program at the Graduate School. Kookmin University further provides the students with active and systematic support such as the Sungkok Scholarship and the Faculty’s Freshmen Scholarship for excellent college freshmen. In addition, the Graduate School is active in attracting excellent foreign students and maintaining exchange programs withleading foreign universities. Currently, the Graduate School has the Department of Communication Design Department, the Department of Metalwork and Jewelry, the Department of Ceramics, the Department of Fashion Design, the Department of Spatial Design, and the Department of Video and Content Design Department.

    Graduate School of Techno Design

    The Graduate School of Techno Design is Korea’s first design graduate school, established through the government’s BK21project. The Graduate School of Techno Design has opened a doctoral program in design science for the first time in Korea, and further presented a professional and innovative vision for design education. The Graduate School of Techno Design aims to establish a multi-disciplinary, network-centered research system, not bound to individual major fields. Thus, the industry-academia-research cooperation plays an active role in increasing the synergy between industry and education, and studies new values required by a future society through the formation of flexible teamwork for each project. The Graduate School of Techno Design further aims to train highly qualified professionals who will lead the future by understanding the human phenomenon, society, economics and management, advanced engineering and arts, not to mention Korean philosophy and its cultural phenomena. Currently, the Graduate School of Techno Design has six departments: the Department of Design Planning, the Department of Experiential Design, the Department of VR Design, the Department of Lifestyle Design, the Department of Visual Design, and the Department of Architectural Design, providing a place for new design values through cross-over majors by operating a total of 16 sub-major labs under the Departments.

    The Graduate College of Design was established in 1994, the period of rapid expansion of design field in Korea, with the aim of cultivating designers with expertise demanded by the society, and extending the educational opportunities for professional designers. The Graduate College of Design provides a practice-based, night-time curriculum distinguished from research-oriented Graduate School, aiming at fostering high-level designers and strengthening the capabilities of designers who are active in the field. The Graduate College of Design intends to evaluate, analyze, and advance the onsite experiences of design practitioners in the academic system in order to promote professional perspectives and self-directed competence. Each major program combines a comprehensive training on humanities, history, information technology, and environmental issues, not only to complement professional design competence to enhance market competitiveness, but also to enhance understanding of various design issues or domestic and foreign design trends which companies and the society are facing in the long term. Graduate College of Design also plays an important role as a design platform that facilitates the organic and creative interactions between the highest-level professors in Korea and design professionals in the field, based on professionalism. The Graduate College of Design currently provides 11 majors in Product Design, Inclusive Design, Visual Design, Illustration, Jewelry Design, Ceramic Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Exhibition Design, Living Architecture Glass, and Transportation Design.
