Introduction
has been held for a total of 15 times until now. It is a large-scale exhibition at Kookmin University that intensively shows the educational philosophy and achievements at the College of Design through the students’ works.
The Exhibition of College of Design began as a way of teaching that encourages students to have the self-directed creation ability to manage their own design products from idea to completion from the beginning of the College of Design. Independent completion of all the creative processes from idea to realization is very important for students to become independent designers or craftsmen.
The preparatory process as designer for all students from the first year to the fourth year at the College of Design to participate in a common project as well as a step- by- step individual project is the opportunity of ‘thinking and learning together’ for the students, and the development of a ‘teaching method to bring up creativity through self-analysis.’ Through the Exhibition of College of Design, the novel ideas reflected in the works from each Department as well as the contents of the new education system have greatly influenced the educational field not to mention the field of architecture, design, crafts and arts in Korea.
Currently, the Exhibition of College of Design is regularly organized every three years, and the Exhibition reflects the sociality and the timeliness required in design education as educational contents by combining the planning work of interpreting the common theme for the Exhibition selected by the faculty in each exhibition. For example, the themes include the ‘Korean, Korea’ series (First, Second, and Third) that highlighted the Korean uniqueness and design methods, ‘Green Design’ (Eighth) that dealt with environmental issues, ‘Cydex’(Ninth) that reflected the changes in the digital environment, ‘Design for the minority’ (Tenth) that inspired social interest in the socially weak, and ‘That’s Design’ (Fifteenth) that discussed a new social paradigm brought about by the development of high-end technology. Design inquiries on the timely themes have inspired social contribution of design as well as practical attitude.
