The Department of Automotive and Transportation Design, which is the eighth department of the Kookmin University College of Design, was established and recruited the first freshmen in 2014. In the meantime, the designers, who had been trained at Kookmin University’s Department of Industrial Design, have been hired in all domestic automobile manufacturers such as Hyundai, Kia Motors, Renault Samsung Motors and Ssangyong Motors. To enhance the professionalism of the education, which is related to automotive and transportation vehicles, the Department of Automobile and Transportation Design was established in 2014 as the eighth department of the College of Design.

In the field of transportation vehicle design focusing on a variety of mobility design such as passenger car design, as shown in the title of the Department, the Department of Automotive and Transportation Design provides the design education that specializes in the various fields of the design development process of transportation vehicle design, such as exterior design, interior design, color design, material development and application, digital modeling, and clay modeling.

The Department of Automotive and Transportation Design aims to provide global leaders who will be active in the field of future automobile and transportation vehicle industry.

The curriculum of the Department of Automotive and Transportation Design is divided into six major areas. Throughout the college years, the curriculum covers the areas of ‘theory’, ‘convergence and connection’, ‘design’, ‘digital’, ‘automobile’, and ‘transportation vehicles,’ evolving from the basis to the applications, and forming the organic linkage to the process of creation. In the ‘design’ area, students learn basic design elements and principles including the 2D and 3D, and develop the basis for creative expression ability. The ‘convergence and connection’ area evolves from the first-yearcourse ‘Automobile Engineering Fundamentals’, to the second-year courses such as ‘CMF’, and ‘Automobile Design Trends’, exploring the connection between engineering and aesthetics through joint programs with the Department of Automotive Engineering. Furthermore, students learn expressions using various media through basic VISCOM and digital modeling. In the ‘theory’ area, ‘modernism study’ which starts from the second year, cultivates the design character of the designer, and develops comprehensive design ability by adding idea development and design methodology. On the other hand, the ‘digital’ area provides the knowledge on how various CAD/CAM programs based on ALIAS as well as 3D printers can operate for design and production, thereby teaching the methodology for production and efficient applicability into the industrial field. In the areas of ‘automobiles’ and ‘transportation vehicles’, the courses develop into ‘automobile design studio’ focusing on passenger cars and ‘transportation vehicle studio’ dealing with various mobility and transportation vehicles.
