History

In 1975, the College of Design began with three departments such as the Department of Architectural Engineering, the Department of Life Arts and the Department of Decorative Arts as the Department of Design. The following year, the Department of Fashion Design was merged to create a four-department system. In 1981, Kookmin University was promoted to a university, which was promoted to College of Architecture & Design. Since then, to meet the needs for advanced education for different design areas required by society and time, the College of Design continued with the division and establishment of departments for future vision. The Department of Decorative Arts was divided into the Department of Industrial Design and the Department of Visual Communication Design. The Department of Living Arts was divided into the Department of Metalwork and Jewelry and Department of Ceramics. In 1998, the Department of Interior Design was newly established. In 2001, the Department of Architecture was separated as the College of Architecture to establish the five-year school system and expand its research area. To provide an independent major

program for expertise, the Department of Entertainment Design in 2010 and the Department of Automotive and Transportation Design in 2014 were newly established.

Currently, the College of Design has eight departments: the Department of Industrial Design, the Department of Decorative Arts, the Department of Metalwork and Jewelry, the Department of Ceramics, the Department of Fashion Design, the Department of Spatial Design, the Department of Entertainment Design, and the Department of Automotive and Transportation Design. In addition, the College of Design has three graduate schools such as Graduate School, Graduate College of Design, Graduate School of Techno Design, as well as four Research Institutes such as the Institute of Environmental Design, the Institute of Techno Design, the Oriental Culture & Design Center, and the Institute of Craft Culture and Industry. The College of Design has currently 51 professors, and have produced approximately 7,500 graduates.
