International Exchange

For diversified expressions and in-depth comparison of works, the Department of Ceramics has been continuously engaged in international exchanges. The way of exchanges is focused on international exchange exhibitions, guest lectures, and students and faculty exchanges with overseas universities. Currently, the Department has close academic relationship with Kansas State University in the USA, Saga University in Japan, and Cardiff University in the UK. The typical examples for such exchanges include an exhibition ‘La Primavera Di Faenza’ in Loggetta del Trentanove, Italy in 2002. In addition, the Department hosted an international joint workshop, The Japanese and Korean Cultural Lifestyles in Ceramics at Saga University, Japan in 2001. The exchange program since the 2000s between Saga University students and Kookmin University students has been enhancing their understanding of cultures by visiting each other and spending time together. The invitations of various overseas scholars and practitioners have been providing opportunities for students to acquire various knowledge. Major lectures and critiques include: Yorigami Munemi (Japanese environmental potter) in 2004, Julian Stair (English potter), and Zen Parry (potter and educator) in 2005, Piet Stockmans (Belgian potter) in 2006, Marshall Maude (Professor of Ceramics at University of Kansas, USA) in 2011, Ikutaro Ito (Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, Japan) in 2013, Jacques Kaufma (President at IAC) in 2015, Yuhki Tanaka (Professor of Ceramics at Saga University) in 2016, and Neil Brown Sword (winner of the Grand Prize at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015 International Competition) in 2017.
